Text: Romans 3:25–30
From the beginning of human history, man has always attempted to reach God through personal effort, self-righteousness, or religious works. But Scripture makes it abundantly clear that salvation is not the result of man’s striving but of God’s grace received through faith in Christ.
1. Salvation Has Always Been God's Initiative Romans 3:25 tells us that: “God hath set forth Jesus] to be a propitiation through faith in His blood.” God was the one who initiated the plan of redemption not man. He presented His Son as the propitiation, meaning the atoning sacrifice that satisfies divine justice. The basis of our salvation is not what we do but what Christ has done. We are not saved because of our works, but because of God's mercy expressed through Christ.
2. The Problem with Works: The Flesh Cannot Keep the Law Romans 3:28 says: “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.” The law was holy and just, but it exposed man’s inability to live up to God’s perfect standard. The flesh (human effort apart from the Spirit) cannot please God. Works can never save because: The law demands absolute perfection (James 2:10). The flesh is weak through sin (Romans 8:3). Trying to earn salvation nullifies grace (Galatians 2:21). To insist on salvation by works is to say that Christ died in vain.
3. Grace Through Faith: The Only Way to Be Justified Romans 3:26–27 says: “To declare, I say, at this time His righteousness: that He might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.” This shows that faith silences boasting. Why? Because faith receives what grace provides. No one can boast before God about how they "earned" salvation. It is a gift received by believing in Jesus Christ and His finished work.
4. Faith in the Finished Work of Christ Is Essential Without faith in the blood of Jesus shed for the remission of sins no one can be saved. His death is not just an example of love; it was a substitutionary sacrifice. Romans 3:25 emphasizes “faith in His blood”. Why the blood? The blood signifies a life given (Leviticus 17:11). It was the required payment for sin (Hebrews 9:22). It cleanses the conscience from dead works (Hebrews 9:14) Salvation is not by trying harder, but by trusting deeper.
5. One God, One Way of Salvation for All Romans 3:29–30 closes the argument powerfully: “Is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.”
This means that salvation is not about nationality, tradition, or heritage. It is about faith in Christ, Jew or Gentile, rich or poor, learned or unlearned. The conclusion is clear: “A man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.” (Romans 3:28)
Let no one deceive you: salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Reject every teaching that places human effort at the center. Christ is enough. His sacrifice is sufficient. His blood has made the way. Believe in Him and live!
